How the web is a friction-less environment – and how to use this to your advantage.
What we we mean by friction-less? Think of it this way: When you go to a store to go shopping, there’s friction- what’s the friction? It’s getting in your car to go there, it’s battling the crowds, it’s pushy sales people, it’s not having all the information you need to make your buying decision and not wanting to ask.
A website, when properly built, is friction-less. It’s informative, it allows a visitor to spend time browsing, getting the information they need about your company to make the right decision.
Here are three criteria we establish when building a website. Use these as a guide as you determine what your website needs to accomplish.
Make the browsing experience friction- less.
Poor organization and design create friction. Have you ever been to one of those websites where, frankly, you felt lost? Why does that happen? Because the menu isn’t clear, as you click from one page to the other, you forget where you are and can’t find the information you need.
Quick Design Tip: Take a look at these words- Cluttered, sloppy, bland, broken links, goofy animation and graphics- make sure none of these describe your site!
Provide credible, original content.
Websites are about information. People come to the web for answers. In fact, most people aren’t going to make a buying decision on their first visit to your website. Answer their questions, fix their problems, do everything you can to serve them.
Quick Content Tip: Leverage other people’s work. You don’t have to provide all the content for your site. Find non-competing businesses that can share their insights with your customers and everybody wins.
Get visitors to take action
Ask for feedback. Offer an email newsletter they can join. Ask them to buy.
Ask, Ask, Ask. You need to begin interacting with your visitors. It’s the only way to determine what works, to improve your site, to establish a relationship and to eventually have them become your customer.
